Self evaluation photography


The brief stated that the concepts of place along with the use of spot colour should be the main feature of the project.

The movie Sin City played a significant part in defining the outcome of my work. I was fascinated by the neo-noir genre and researched its origins.
The noir style originated in the early 40s as well as the German expressionism movement has profoundly influenced my photography.

My intention was to portray the neo-noir genre contaminated with the graphic novel style of storytelling.

The location chosen for the photoshoot were Shoreditch and Liverpool station as they would suit my intent of implementing noir stereotypes such as:

  • Violence that occurs at night in an urban area
  • Femme fatale
  • Darkness of plot and theme
  • The symbolism of the train station, hat and umbrella

After the above research,  I did a synopsis and storyboard of the project to aid me to visualise the composition and to optimise the planning phase.


As mentioned above the shots in the station were meant to heave significant meaning and impact in my project. However, I couldn’t take them properly as the security didn’t allow me and my model proced with the photo shoot.
The challenging part of working solo was to plan and develop the whole rationale behind the project; the editing process has also been arduous but stimulating as I didn’t have much knowledge of the Adobe Photoshop software.
I am satisfied with the outcome of the project considering my skills and the fact that I did the project by myself, however, found it difficult to keep the consistency of style across all the shots, due to time constraints. I would like to improve the look of the first two pictures and add extra detail to the others such as fog, smoke and better lighting.




Self Evaluation


GoYo Maps is an app designed for preschool kids (3– 5). The app is an educational game that consist in an interactive and colourful map of the world. The screen following the home page allows the user to chose two different characters, a boy or a girl. Subsequently a new part of the app will unfold, the map of the world where most of the interaction takes part. The map is divided in 5 continents, each one of them displaying its most iconic landmark and animal. Clicking on the animal silhouette will reproduce its sound and a click on the landmark will show a fun fact about it. The app is designed to teach simple facts about geography and animals in a fun yet interactive way.

My role in this group project was firstly, along with the other members, to define an idea of the app  and its interaction. Multiple wireframes and mood boards were created in order to determine its structure. Secondly my duty was to provide researched material regarding the world landmarks.
The researched consisted in finding interesting facts that could have been appealing to the user about the world’s most iconic landmarks. Thirdly my contribution was addressed to frame the map by providing templates of icons and animal silhouettes to the group. Fourthly I was involved, along with other team mates, with the use of a vector graphic software ( adobe illustrator ) in order to edit the new map and providing additional detail to it, utilizing a new colour palette and a different set of icons, unfortunately due to time constraint this alternative map was not include in the final app.

The structure and concept behind the app was successful, the app was tested by a preschool child(our age target) with a positive feedback. The child found the app to be interesting, funny yet educational. On the other hand, many aspects of it could be improved. A new version of the map with more details, an improved colour palette, better icons and sound effects was designed in order to enhance the user experience, however not included in the final project due to time constraint. Additional development time and superior coding skills would have lead to the improvement of other features such as an improved interaction. The group goal was to magnify the synergy between the app and the user by adding a feature that would allow the child to test its memory with a game at the end of the world exploration. The idea is to create a final screen of the app where the map is blank and all the previously seen icon would be shuffled at its bottom. The user should then, in this new screen, click and drag animals and landmarks to their correct position within the continents, earning points based on speed and accuracy, or having penalties in case of  wrong placement of the icons, eventually the child would earn a badge or trophy based on the score achieved. This feature along with the new map would have changed and enhance significantly the outcome of the app, it would have been more appealing for the child and the information and knowledge  would have been absorbed naturally.
